An American businessman and politician, one of the Big Four investors behind the Central Pacific Railroad, elected its president on its 1861 incorporation. As the railroads head, he presided at the ceremonial driving of the Last Spike at Promontory, Utah on 10 May 1869, connecting the Central Pacifics track with the Union Pacific Railroad and completing the First Transcontinental Railroad. He later founded Stanford University.
