Napier Sabre

Aircraft Engines

The Napier Sabre is a British H-24 configuration, liquid cooled, sleeve valve piston aero engine designed by Major Frank Halford and built by D. Napier & Son, first running in January 1938. Developed versions reached as much as 3,500 horsepower, and the Sabre powered the Hawker Typhoon and Hawker Tempest fighters of the Second World War, the Tempest becoming the principal destroyer of the V-1 flying bomb; early production and reliability problems were resolved by 1944, after which the Sabre was recognized as one of the most powerful inline piston aircraft engines in the world.
