The Mitsubishi 4M4 is a range of four-cylinder diesel piston engines from Mitsubishi Motors, first introduced in the second generation of the Montero, Pajero and Shogun sport utility vehicles. It superseded the earlier 4D5 family, with larger displacements and one or two overhead camshafts. It began as a 2,835 cc intercooled turbo unit, the 4M40; detail improvements followed in 1996 and a larger 3.2 litre option, the 4M41, arrived in 1999. The final version has 3.0 litres of swept volume and common rail direct injection. Applications named in the source include later Pajero generations, the Triton and L200 pickups, the Delica van and, with the 4M42, the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter light truck.
