Mitsubishi 4B1 engine

Automotive Engines

The Mitsubishi 4B1 engine is a range of all-alloy straight-4 piston engines built at Mitsubishi's Japanese World Engine powertrain plant in Shiga on the basis of the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance. The basic designs are shared, but each partner, Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai, tunes its own specification. The cylinder block and other structural parts were developed jointly by the alliance companies, while Mitsubishi independently developed the intake and exhaust manifolds, the cylinder head ports and the tuning elements. Every engine in the family has an aluminium block and head, four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts and MIVEC continuous variable valve timing, and all share a block with a 96 mm bore pitch, with displacement set by bore and stroke. It was the first family to apply continuously variable valve timing to the exhaust valves as well as the intake valves. Variants include the 1.8 litre 4B10, the 2.0 litre 4B11 and the turbocharged 4B11T used in the Lancer Evolution X, with applications that began in 2007 in the Lancer and Peugeot 4007 and later included the Outlander and Proton Inspira.
