The Mazda Wankel engine is a family of rotary combustion car engines Mazda has produced since 1967, based on the rotary design German engineer Felix Wankel invented in the 1950s, which turns a triangular rotor inside an epitrochoidal housing rather than using reciprocating pistons. Mazda remained the only manufacturer of Wankel powered production cars for decades, building versions from 0.4 to 2.6 liters and 100 to 900 horsepower through the RX-8's discontinuation in 2012, and reintroduced the rotary in 2023 as a generator in the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV plug-in hybrid.
