China Railways DFH shunting locomotives

The Dongfang Hong shunting locomotives were the single-cab diesel-hydraulic members of the DFH series used on China Railways, covering the DFH2, DFH5, DFH6, DFH7 and DFH21, and built from the 1970s to the 1990s. Sifang designed the DFH2 in 1966 as a passenger locomotive, but in 1973 the design was changed at the Ziyang locomotive works into a 650 kilowatt shunter with a top speed of 62 kilometres per hour. Ziyang later redesigned it as the DFH5 for industrial and mining railways, and 450 were built between 1975 and 1993. In 1976 Sifang produced DFH and DFH2 locomotives for the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, the first locomotives exported from China. Sifang developed the metre-gauge DFH21 in 1977 for the Yunnan railway, and Vietnam Railways runs them as the D10H. Diesel-hydraulic shunters later fell out of favour in China in preference to diesel-electric designs, though the type continued in industrial service, and DFH2 0008 and DFH5 0001 are preserved at the Beijing museum.
