The percentage of travelers, or of trips, using a particular mode of transport, measured by trip count for passengers or by tonnage for freight. Planners use it as a headline indicator of a sustainable transport strategy, and many cities set explicit modal share targets, commonly around 30 percent non-motorized travel and 30 percent public transit.
