The freedoms of the air are a numbered set of international commercial aviation rights, agreed at the 1944 Chicago Convention, that let an airline of one country fly into, over or through the airspace and airports of another. Nine freedoms are now recognized in practice, though the Chicago Convention itself enumerated only the first five, and together they form the fundamental building blocks on which the international commercial route network is built.
