An airport slot, also called a landing slot or takeoff slot, is permission granted by a slot coordinator to use the infrastructure of a Level 3 coordinated airport for takeoff or landing at one specific time and date. Coordinated status is assigned to airports whose runway or terminal capacity cannot handle every airline's desired schedule, so slots are allocated, held and traded much like a scarce resource, shaping which airlines can serve a congested hub at all.
