Charles Lindbergh

Also Known As Charles Augustus Lindbergh
Aviation Pioneers and Aviators

An American aviator who, on 20 to 21 May 1927, flew solo and nonstop from Roosevelt Field on Long Island to Le Bourget Aerodrome near Paris in the purpose built Spirit of St. Louis, a flight of about 3,600 miles lasting over 33 hours. It was not the first transatlantic crossing but was the first solo one and, at nearly 2,000 miles longer than any earlier flight, set a new distance record. He won the 25,000 dollar Orteig Prize, established by hotelier Raymond Orteig for the first nonstop New York to Paris flight, and the achievement, dubbed the Lindbergh Boom, sharply expanded public interest in aviation, pilot training and commercial air service. FAQs

Did Charles Lindbergh receive the Medal of Honor for his Atlantic flight?

Yes, by a Special Act of Congress in December 1927, presented in March 1928.

Yes. A Special Act of Congress on December 14, 1927 awarded Lindbergh the Medal of Honor for the 1927 New York to Paris flight, even though that medal was almost always given for heroism in combat. President Calvin Coolidge presented it at the White House on March 21, 1928. Lindbergh was also recognized for the same flight with the Distinguished Flying Cross, which sat awkwardly with Coolidge's earlier executive order that no more than one of the several decorations should be awarded for the same act.
