Frank Halford

Aviation Industrialists and Engineers

Major Frank Bernard Halford (1894 to 1955) was an English aircraft engine designer. He is best known for the series of de Havilland Gipsy engines, widely used by light aircraft in the 1920s and 1930s. He also designed the Napier Sabre, a British H-24, liquid-cooled, sleeve valve piston aero engine built by D. Napier and Son. Halford held the CBE and was a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and his work spanned the light-aircraft engines of the interwar years and the very powerful piston fighter engines of the Second World War.
