American industrialist, founder of the Ford Motor Company. He did not invent the automobile or the assembly line, but he was the first to apply a moving assembly line to automobile manufacture, starting with the Model T in 1913, cutting the time to build a car from about twelve hours to roughly ninety minutes and putting car ownership within reach of ordinary wage earners.
