The Volkswagen-Audi V8 engine is a family of mechanically similar V8 piston engines, both gasoline and diesel, developed and produced by the Volkswagen Group together with Audi since 1988. The first spark ignition V8 of the family powered the 1988 Audi V8 model, and the first compression ignition diesel V8 arrived in the 1999 Audi A8 3.3 TDI Quattro. Since then these engines have been used in most Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini models, and by other Volkswagen owned companies. The larger diesel versions also went into Scania commercial vehicles, including trucks, buses and marine applications, which shows how one engine architecture was spread across passenger cars, luxury marques and heavy duty transport.
