Zetec is a name that Ford Motor Company used on a variety of inline four cylinder car engines. It was coined for a range of 1.6 to 2.0 litre multi-valve engines introduced in 1991, replacing the name Zeta after the Italian maker Lancia, which owned that trademark, threatened legal action. The first Zetec branded engine was the Zeta family, which powered the fifth generation European Escort, the third generation Orion and the Mk3 Fiesta, and a 2.0 litre version arrived in the new Mondeo in 1993. Its four valve per cylinder DOHC head replaced the CVH, and a North American version reached the Contour with a non-interference design. Ford applied the name widely in Europe, used Zetec as a trim level, and had Cosworth build a Zetec R V8 Formula One engine that won the 1994 title with Benetton.
