The Ford LT engine, sometimes called the Dagenham, is a 1.6 litre diesel inline-four used in the Ford Escort and its Orion and Escort Van derivatives, and also in the Mark 2 Fiesta. It was designed from the start purely as a diesel, without the compromises needed when a design must also run on petrol, and it was built only at the Ford Dagenham plant. Design work had help from the German diesel specialist Deutz, which already supplied engines for the heavier Ford Cargo trucks. Output is 40 kW (54 PS) at 4800 rpm, the crankshaft has five bearings and the in-cylinder glow plugs bring pre-heating down to between 7 and 12 seconds depending on the outside temperature. The LT was the base for the later 1.8 litre Lynx diesel.
