EcoBoost is the name of a series of turbocharged, direct injection gasoline engines from Ford, originally co-developed with the engineering firm FEV. The idea is to give the power and torque of a larger naturally aspirated engine while, Ford says, using up to 20 percent less fuel and producing 15 percent fewer greenhouse emissions, at lower cost than expanding hybrid or diesel technology. V6 units are assembled at the Cleveland Engine Plant in Ohio, the 2.0 litre four cylinder was built in Valencia, the 1.6 litre in Bridgend and the 1.0 litre three cylinder in Cologne and Craiova. Ford planned 750,000 units a year in the United States by 2012 and offered the technology across most of its range, though some engines have been recalled for overheating and fires.
