The Pontiac New Series was the first car built by Pontiac, a marque of General Motors, and it appeared on 1 March 1926 as the Series 6-27. The line was then renamed New Finer 6-27 in January 1927 and New Series 6-28 in January 1928, and in 1929 the Big Six took its place. Early cars were offered only as a two-door coupe or a two-door sedan, and roadster, cabriolet, landaulet and phaeton bodies were added in later model years. It used a side-valve inline six-cylinder engine of 3,057 cubic centimetres rated at 40 bhp, with a dry single-plate clutch, a three-speed gearbox and a propeller shaft to the rear wheels. Only the rear wheels had mechanical brakes at first. About 414,000 cars were built in three years.
