Plymouth Model U

The Plymouth Model U was a mid-size car that Chrysler built under the Plymouth name for the 1929 model year, priced from 655 US dollars for the business coupe, 15 dollars less than the cheapest car of the year before. Its side-valve inline four of 2,874 cubic centimetres produced 45 brake horsepower (33 kilowatts) and, unlike that of the predecessor Model Q, was a Chrysler design. A single-plate dry clutch and a three-speed gearbox drove the rear wheels, and all four wheels had hydraulic brakes. Touring cars, two- and four-door sedans, business and deluxe coupes and roadsters were offered. The Chrysler name was dropped from the car, which made Plymouth an independent make. 108,345 had been built when the Model 30U replaced it in April 1930.
