The Mercedes-Benz W 28, sold as the 170 H, was a rear-engined saloon built from 1936 to 1939. German Wikipedia calls it a further development of the rear-engined W 23, the Type 130, using parts of the front-engined W 136, the Type 170 V. It was shown at the Berlin motor show in February 1936 together with its sister model, the Type 170 V, and the larger diesel 260 D. The car was better equipped than the front-engined sister and cost 4,350 Reichsmark, 15 percent more. Its side-valve four-cylinder inline engine sat lengthwise in the tail, displaced 1,697 cubic centimetres and developed 38 PS, about 28 kilowatts, at 3,400 revolutions a minute, the same as the 170 V. Because of the rear-heavy weight distribution it handled worse than the front-engined car, and in 1939 the rear-engined cars were dropped without a successor because of the war and weak demand. The streamlined Schlorwagen was built on its base in 1939.
