Mercedes-Benz W14

Automobiles

The Mercedes-Benz W14 was a small-car prototype and the further development of the W01 of 1926, which the company management had judged unmarketable because of its expensive six-cylinder engine. Ferdinand Porsche reworked the concept and designed a four-cylinder engine of 1280 cubic centimetres rated at 18.4 kilowatts, again as a 5/25 PS type. Because the four-cylinder was less flexible he specified a four-speed gearbox, and the car reached 84 kilometres per hour. Twenty-eight prototypes were built as tourers and saloons. Management liked it better, but it set the break-even point at 1000 cars a month, which would have needed an immediate investment of 10 million Reichsmark, and the compact car project was shelved for good.
