Mercedes-Benz W129

Automobiles

The Mercedes-Benz W129, sold under the name 580 K as a project but never as a series car, was a prototype that Daimler-Benz built in 1939 and 1940 as the intended successor to the Type 540 K. It followed the layout of the 540 K but the engine had grown to 5670 cubic centimetres and gave 96 kilowatts naturally aspirated and 147 kilowatts with the supercharger engaged. Top speed was 180 kilometres per hour. A few prototypes were completed on the short chassis as a sports coupe and a sports roadster, and the outbreak of war meant that no series production followed. It should not be confused with the R129 SL-Class of the 1990s, which shares only the number.
