The Mercedes-Benz W 01 was a small prototype car designed by Ferdinand Porsche as the 5/25 PS type, intended to appear at the Berlin motor show of October 1926 alongside the larger W 02 and W 03. Eight prototypes were built, some as two-door touring cars and some as two-door saloons. A side-valve inline six-cylinder engine of 1,392 cubic centimetres gave 25 PS and a top speed of 88 km/h, with a live rear axle on semi-elliptic leaf springs and cable brakes on all four wheels. Management judged a six-cylinder engine too costly for this class and the car was never put on sale; Mercedes entered the smaller classes only in 1931 and 1934.
