Mercedes 15/70/100 PS

Automobiles

The Mercedes 15/70/100 PS was a large, fast and very expensive road car introduced by Daimler in 1924, designed by drawing on the knowledge gained from the company's racing cars. Its defining feature was a switchable supercharger, the Kompressor, fitted to a six cylinder in-line engine of 3920 cc with an overhead camshaft: the figure 15 gave the German tax horsepower, while 70 and 100 gave the claimed output in metric horsepower with the supercharger off and on. The Daimler company merged with Benz and Cie in 1926, and from then on the same car was sold as the Mercedes-Benz Typ 400 with no change to the car itself. Bodies ranged from Torpedo tourers to Pullman limousines, landaulets and cabriolets, and many buyers bought a bare chassis and had a coachbuilder fit the body. Production ran until 1929, with 1002 built before the merger and a further 911 after it. Its replacement was the Nürburg 460.
