Lanchester petrol-electric car

Automobiles

The Lanchester petrol-electric car is a one-off prototype motor vehicle designed in 1927 by Frederick W. Lanchester at the Lanchester Motor Company in Birmingham, England. It was a hybrid: a petrol engine mounted at the rear worked alongside an electric motor that handled starting and reversing and added power on hills, then acted as a generator to recharge the battery when the car ran at speed under petrol power. The car has no clutch or gearbox, and its body and suspension are made of wood. The design never went into production, and Lanchester abandoned the project after the car had been driven only 757 miles. It survives on display at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum.
