The BMW 337 was a large luxury car that BMW developed between 1938 and 1941, the biggest model ever planned for series production at its Eisenach plant. The plan was a four-door Pullman saloon of the upper class with a modern body, a fastback tail and flowing wings, powered by a 3.5 litre inline six, with a normal saloon, a cabriolet and a coupe also drawn up. With it BMW wanted to establish itself in the luxury class against Audi, Horch and Mercedes-Benz, and the styling showed American influence for the first time. The war stopped series production, and only one running pre-series chassis was built, in 1940, meant for Professor Wunibald Kamm and his research institute in Stuttgart as the base for a further streamlined test car after the earlier K1 and K4 cars.
