The BMW 309 was a small four-cylinder car that BMW built at Eisenach from 1934 to 1936 as the successor to the 3/20 PS. It combined the chassis and body of the six-cylinder 303 with the cheaper drive train of the 3/20, whose engine was enlarged to about 845 cubic centimetres and 22 PS, or 16 kW, to suit the heavier car. Buyers could order a bare chassis, a saloon, a cabriolet saloon, a tourer or a two or four seat cabriolet, all with two doors, and the car reached about 80 km/h with rear wheel drive and a four speed gearbox. Roughly 6,000 were built. The engine hung elastically from two mounts under a licence BMW bought from Chrysler, and the 309 was the last BMW four cylinder until the New Class of 1962.
