The Austin London Taxicab was a taxi built on a modified Austin Heavy Twelve-Four chassis, with bodies designed by Mann and Overton, London largest taxicab dealer, and made for them by London coachbuilders. Will Overton had sold French Unic taxicabs since 1906, supplying nearly 80 percent of new London cabs in 1924, but the McKenna duties on imported commercial vehicles from May 1926 made them too dear. He asked Herbert Austin to modify the hire-car chassis to meet the London Conditions of Fitness, which were due to be relaxed in 1928, and Mann and Overton catalogued three standard bodies by Strachan, Vincent or Jones. From 1930 to 1934 the first cab was known as the High Lot or Upright Grand, then a lowered chassis made it the Low Loading taxi.
