The Austin 40 hp was a four-cylinder car launched at the Olympia Motor Show in November 1907 and made by Austin at Longbridge, Birmingham. It was the first variant from Austin's original plan for a two-model range of a 15 hp and a 25 hp car and took the 25-30 place in the catalogue. The engine had a slightly larger cylinder bore than the 25-30, giving an RAC rating of 36.3 hp from 5,842 cc, and a crankshaft in five bearings. Power reached the live rear axle through a multiple-disc clutch with phosphor bronze and steel friction surfaces and a four-speed gearbox with sliding spur gears.
