Jeep DJ

Automobiles

The Jeep DJ, also called the Dispatcher, was a two-wheel-drive variant of the four-wheel-drive CJ series. Willys began building it in 1955, as the DJ-3A for the 1956 model year, and the company became Kaiser Jeep in 1963, after which American Motors bought Kaiser's Jeep operations in 1970 and its AM General subsidiary built the DJ through 1984. Using existing CJ-3A tooling and the L-134 engine, it was the lowest-priced production car in the United States in 1956 at 1,284 dollars, offered with soft top, metal top or a full van body with sliding doors. Variants included the resort Gala and Surrey and the right-hand-drive Dispatcher 100 that the Postal Service adopted for mail rounds.
