The TR3 proper was built from 1955 to 1957, an evolution of the earlier TR2 with greater power and improved braking. In 1956 the front brakes were changed from drums to discs, a first for a British series production car. The TR3 was succeeded by the mechanically similar Michelotti styled TR4 only after the updated variants, popularly known as the TR3A and TR3B, had run to 1962. As of the first quarter of 2011, there were approximately 826 licensed TR3 and TR3A cars on the DVLA register. Its model years run from 1955 to 1957.
