The Mercury Meta One was a concept car created by Mercury, a four-door crossover sport-utility vehicle that made its debut at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, and the first concept vehicle designed with a PZEV diesel-hybrid powertrain. Loosely based on the body of the production Ford Freestyle, it was a luxury crossover with four seats that served as a testbed for in-vehicle technology: an always-on Wi-Fi connection, Sirius satellite radio, real-time traffic and route updates for the navigation system, reconfigurable computer displays instead of an instrument panel, and a smart key that doubled as a PDA. Designed in collaboration with Volvo, it carried safety technologies unseen on a production Ford vehicle, including lane departure control and collision mitigation by pre-charging the brakes. It was powered by a 248 horsepower twin-turbocharged 2.7 litre diesel V6 from the Australian Ford Territory and the Land Rover Discovery lines, with a continuously variable transmission and an electric motor providing start-stop technology, for a combined torque of 431 pound-feet. It was never released as a production vehicle, and its current location, or whether it still exists, is unknown.
