Lancia D50

Automobiles

The Lancia D50 was a Formula One racing car designed by Vittorio Jano for Lancia in 1954. It used the engine as a stressed chassis member, set the engine off-centre to lower the overall height, and carried pannier fuel cells for better weight distribution and aerodynamics. Six were built and two are displayed in Italian museums. It debuted late in the 1954 season with Alberto Ascari, who took pole position and fastest lap in its first race before the clutch failed after ten laps. After Ascari's death, with Lancia in financial trouble, the family sold its controlling share and Scuderia Lancia's assets went to Ferrari, which developed the car as the Lancia-Ferrari D50 and later the Ferrari D50; Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1956 drivers' title in it. It started 14 World Championship Grands Prix, winning five, and lived on in 1957 as the Ferrari 801.
