Wartburg 312

Automobiles

The Wartburg 312 was the interim passenger car of VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, built from 1965 until 1967 between the Wartburg 311 and the Wartburg 353. It put a new low-maintenance chassis with independent suspension and long spring travel under the familiar 311 body, so production could carry on without a break while the 353 was readied. It rode on smaller 13-inch wheels, had the 311 two-stroke engine at first rated at 45 PS, and gradually received 353 parts, including the 50 PS engine and in some cars front disc brakes. The saloon gave way to the 353 in late 1966, while the estate and camping versions ran on into 1967. About 35,868 were built in several body styles, and it remains a favourite with collectors today.
