Standard Vanguard Sportsman

Automobiles

The Standard Vanguard Sportsman was the performance model of the Vanguard, announced in August 1956 after being intended to wear the Triumph Renown badge until shortly before launch. Its engine was tuned to 90 bhp with features like the Triumph TR3 sports car, including a higher compression ratio of 8.0:1, twin SU carburettors and improved pistons, though its manifold and carburettors sat at a different angle and its bore matched the Vanguard at 85 mm. The final drive was lowered to 4.55:1 and 10 in brake drums were fitted, and it had a squarer grille than the standard cars while sharing the basic Vanguard body shell. A Sportsman with overdrive tested by The Motor in 1956 reached 90.7 mph. Just 901 were made up to 1958, then about fifty more, mostly estate cars, to special order until 1960, a total of 962.
