The Peugeot 505 is a large family car that the French manufacturer Peugeot produced from 1979 to 1992 at Sochaux, and it was also built in Argentina by Sevel from 1981 to 1995 and in China, Thailand, Indonesia and Nigeria. It was officially unveiled on 16 May 1979 as the replacement for the 504, with which it shared many underpinnings, and it was Peugeot's last rear-wheel drive car. It was first sold as a saloon, with a station wagon that included an eight-passenger Familiale version arriving at the 1982 Geneva Motor Show. Pininfarina and Peugeot's own styling department shaped it, Paul Bracq designed the original interior, and its ride and handling on rough roads made it popular in less developed countries, where it is still called the work horse of Africa. Dangel converted four-wheel drive versions, and the range gained a 2165 cc Douvrin engine in the 1982 STI, a 2.2 litre Turbo Injection in October 1982 and a 2.8 litre PRV V6 in 1986. According to the manufacturer, 1,351,254 were produced.
