The Peugeot 406 is a large family car that the French automaker Peugeot produced from 1995 to 2004, available as a saloon, estate and coupé with petrol or turbodiesel engines. It replaced the 405 and was itself replaced by the 407. It was launched in September 1995, with United Kingdom sales from February 1996, and it was notably successful in Britain, where many became company cars and taxis. The front suspension was an inverted MacPherson layout and the rear a new multilink design called RS10. The two-door coupé was introduced at the 1996 Paris Motor Show, designed and built by the Italian studio Pininfarina with a 2.0 litre four-cylinder or 3.0 litre V6 engine and later a 2.2 litre HDi diesel, and 107,633 were made. A facelifted saloon arrived in February 1999, and in August 2002 a 406 HDi set the world record for the longest distance driven on a single tank of fuel, 2,348 km across Australia.
