The Peugeot 405 is a large family car that the French automaker Peugeot made from 1987 to 1997, voted European Car of the Year for 1988 by the largest number of votes in the history of the contest. Peugeot unveiled ten versions of the saloon in July 1987, with sales on the continent from October 1987 and in the United Kingdom from January 1988, and the estate followed in May 1988. It shares its floorpan with the Citroën BX and used TU and XU petrol and XUD diesel engines, with four-wheel-drive versions that kept hydropneumatic suspension only on the rear axle. Its appearance is similar to the Alfa Romeo 164, also styled by Pininfarina. About 2.5 million were sold worldwide. It was the last Peugeot sold in the United States, from 1988 to 1991, and Iran Khodro kept building it under licence in Iran until 2020, which made its 33-year run the twentieth most long-lived single generation car in history.
