The SD1 was replaced by the Rover 800 series in 1986, ending a ten year production run. Project XX, a venture between BL and Honda begun in 1981, ultimately emerged as the Rover 800 Series in 1986, the replacement for the SD1. The Series 2, built at Cowley, had been produced from 1982 to 1986 by the Austin Rover division. It was the last year of the SD1. It was succeeded in the Rover range by a car designed with Honda.
