Since August 1978 a carbureted engine of the Rover V8, with antismog equipment, had been on sale in Australia with 102 kW. Rover had by then separated Land Rover from Rover, in 1978, so that the Solihull plant would later be turned over to produce Land Rover models. The SD1 of 1978 was the V8 3500 and the new 2300 and 2600 sixes, and was built by British Leyland. It was the third year of the Series 1.
