The SD1 won the European Car of the Year title for 1977, with its launch on the European mainland coinciding with its appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1977, some three months after the award announcement. In November 1977 the single overhead camshaft 2.3 liter and 2.6 liter sixes followed, when the Rover P6 and Triumph 2000 were finally discontinued. Raymond Mays praised his Rover 3500 in Autocar in March 1977.
