The SD1 was launched on its home market in June 1976, in hatchback and fastback form only, as the V8 engined Rover 3500. Rover had begun developing the new car in 1971 to replace both the Rover P6 and the Triumph 2000 and 2500, largely funded by the British government, which had bailed British Leyland out from bankruptcy in 1975. The car and its design team received The Midlander of the Year Award for 1976.
