The 800 was a steady seller in the home market until the spring of 1999, when it was replaced by the Rover 75, although it had fallen behind the competition considerably, with few mechanical changes made apart from the introduction of the Rover KV6 engine. It had been manufactured by the Rover Group since 1986 and was the successor to the SD1. The car had been on sale for thirteen years. The Rover 75 replaced it.
