The Silver Wraith was announced by Rolls-Royce in April 1946 as the first post war Rolls-Royce, a chassis only at the company's Crewe factory, which had been its Merlin engine plant. The use of the name wraith coincided with the established tradition of naming models after ghosts. The Bentley Mark VI was made alongside it but for the first time could be bought with a Rolls-Royce built Standard Steel body, while the Wraith could not.
