Design and production of the first Phantom IV chassis was at the experimental Clan Foundry at Belper, which had been the home of the motor car branch during the Second World War, and the Experimental Department was transferred to Crewe in 1950 when it closed. The remaining seventeen chassis were made at the Experimental Department workshop at the Crewe factory, because the small numbers would have disrupted production of other models. In 1951 the Phantom IV was still being built in very small numbers.
