The Ghost nameplate was announced in April 2009 at the Auto Shanghai show, and the production model was officially unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, going on sale in September 2009. The 200EX concept shown at the March 2009 Geneva Motor Show had previewed the styling, which went into production virtually unaltered. Deliveries in the UK and Europe began late in 2009, the first Ghosts to reach customers.
