The main competitor of the 4/Seventy Two, appearing in 1963, was the Humber Sceptre of the Rootes Group, with an 85 horsepower engine, four direct ratios plus overdrive on third and fourth, or from 1965 a three speed automatic, and a more modern interior. The Riley was by then a design dating from 1959. Its engine was the twin carburettor 1.6 liter B series unit of 68 horsepower. It was a design from 1959 that was still being sold in 1963.
