The Jeep Gladiator, also sold as the Jeep Pickup or J-series, was a line of full-size pickup trucks on the large Jeep SJ Wagoneer platform, built and sold under several marques from 1962 until 1988, more than 26 years on one generation. Kaiser developed the first Gladiators in the early 1960s and American Motors carried them on through the 1970s, with versions built in Mexico by VAM and in Argentina by IKA. Chrysler dropped the SJ pickups and the compact Comanche after buying AMC. The 1962 launch brought the first overhead-cam engine in an American light truck, the 230 cubic inch Tornado six of 140 horsepower, and a 327 cubic inch AMC V8 of 250 horsepower arrived in 1965. The name returned in 2018 on a Wrangler-based pickup.
