Jeep CJ

Automobiles

The Jeep CJ, short for civilian Jeep, was the long-running series of small open-bodied off-road vehicles and compact pickups that grew from the wartime Jeep. Willys-Overland built prototypes in 1944, and the 1945 Universal Jeep was the first mass-produced civilian four-wheel-drive car. Every CJ kept a separate body and frame, live axles on leaf springs, a tapering nose with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield and, mostly, part-time four-wheel drive, though the line moved from flat to round fenders with the 1955 CJ-5, added straight-six and V8 engines and automatic gearboxes, and stretched the wheelbase 10 inches in the 1976 CJ-7. It passed through several corporate owners and ended after 1986, with more than 1.5 million built.
