The Ford Mustang Boss 429 was a high-performance variant of the Ford Mustang that Ford offered in 1969 and 1970. It carried a race-designed 429 cubic inch semi-hemispherical head version of the big-block 429 V8, fitted so that Ford could homologate the engine for NASCAR racing, where the rules required at least 500 cars to be sold to the public, and to offer a bigger alternative to the small-block Boss 302. The cars were shipped from the Rouge plant to Kar Kraft in Brighton, Michigan for engine installation and further modification. At nearly 5,000 dollars the Boss 429 cost roughly twice as much as a base six-cylinder Mustang, and 1,359 were produced. It was advertised at 375 brake horsepower and had a clean exterior without the spoilers and window louvers of other performance Mustangs.
