The Morris 1800 was launched early in 1966, as an additional badge engineered variant of the Austin 1800 launched in September 1964. Further improvements to the 1800 followed the launch of the Morris, with gear cables revamped and the seat mountings adapted to increase rake in May 1966. The 1800 had been voted European Car of the Year for 1965, and the Morris variant was aimed at the BMC dealerships selling the Morris marque.
